Hymn Text
1 I saw him in childhood with eyes brightly beaming,
In rays of the rainbow on mountaintops gleaming;
He fondly embraced me, my fancy befriending,
But veiled by the verdure the cross was impending.
2 I saw him in youth when all life was adorning
The flights of my spirit in glorious morning.
He beckoned my soul as the glow of his portal
Shed radiance and rapture on all that is moral.
3 I saw him in mid-life in holy decorum;
The sinner surrendered in judgment before him;
And trembling, my heart in contrition was burning,
As death terrors closed o'er my spirit in yearning.
4 'Twas then I beheld Him as merciful Savior
Whose cross lost offense and restored me to favor
Embracing my burden I found a reunioin:
The Savior and sinner once more in communion.
5 Again I shall see him when evening comes o'er me,
When daylight shall silently cadence before me.
And death o'er my vision dim shadows is casting,
O then I shall greet him in joy everlasting.
