Unit 1 - Lesson 2 - Old Testament

Cain and Abel

Theme: Anger
Biblical Basis: Genesis 4:1-16

After the fall of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the garden, Scripture shows how the legacy of sin passed down to their children. Cain became jealous of the favor that God had shown to Abel; In his rage Cain took out his frustration not on God but on his brother. He was exiled ... but under the protection of God.

Additional Text: James 4:1-10
Lesson Prayer:

Almighty God, too often we let our anger get the best of us and it causes us to fall into sin. We thank you for your grace in those times when we do lose our temper and act without self-control. Help us to see that we have nothing to be jealous about, that you love your whole creation and that there is enough love to go around for everyone. We pray this through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Memory Verse:

The LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. (Genesis 4:4b-5)
