Sola Scriptura:
A Bible Study on the Functional Authority of Scripture

Part 1: The Source of Faith
(Six chapters; recommended as a 12-week series)

by the Rev. Dr. Steven E. King

A Latin phrase meaning “Scripture Alone,” Sola Scriptura is one of the traditional Lutheran slogans used since the time of the Reformation. It expresses our confession that Scripture is “the only rule and norm according to which all doctrines and teachers alike must be appraised and judged.” This advanced-level Bible Study is a total of twelve chapters divided into two parts, both focusing on the functional authority of Scripture. For those who would like to cover the topic in detail, there is enough material to cover one chapter in two sessions, making each part a 12-week study.

In Part 1: "The Source of Faith," we look at the nature of God’s Word in the broadest sense, applying it specifically to how we understand the nature of the Bible itself. By focusing on a functional definition of Scripture’s power, the study describes what the Bible is based on what it does - in particular, how the Scriptures convey the promise of Jesus Christ, and how God uses his Word to create faith by the power of the Holy Spirit.
