Unit 1 • Lesson 1 • Old Testament

The Days of Creation

Theme: Creation

Biblical Basis • Genesis 1:1-10, 1:24-2:3

In the first chapter of the Bible, we hear how God created the heavens and the earth by the power of his Word. As the crown of his creation, God made humankind in his own image. He gave humans a garden in which to live and work as his stewards.

Additional Text: Isaiah 45:5-8, 12

Lesson Prayer

Lord of all creation, you are the Maker of all things, and you continue to graciously sustain the created order. Thank you for giving us a world in which to live and work. May we be good stewards of the earth and of all that you have so generously given us. We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. (Genesis 1:31)

Creative Idea for the Week

Getting to Know Each Other:  If this is the first day of Sunday School for the school year, it is a great day to focus on learning names. Have name tags prepared, or have the kids cut out name tags from contruction paper. Write down the student's names on an attendance chart and explain how attendance will be counted each week.

Classroom Rules: Establish classroom rules with students. You might have a poster list prepared in advance, or you may want the students to help come up with a list for themselves. Ask: What are basic guidelines we need to have an orderly classroom? What are ways we should treat each other?
