Baby Moses in the Basket

Theme: Protection

Biblical Basis • Exodus 1:8 - 2:10

The opening chapters of the Book of Exodus show the conditions under which the Hebrews lived in Egypt as slaves. The Pharaoh tried to limit the Hebrew population by killing all the baby sons born to them. But Moses’ mother and sister had a plan to save him from this fate.

Additional Text: Hebrews 11:23-26

Lesson Prayer

Almighty God, through your Holy Spirit you gave faith to Moses and his parents to trust in you. Grant us that same faith and courage. Thank you for watching over us. We pray this through Chris our Lord. Amen.

Memory Verse

His mother took for him a basket made of bulrushes, and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. (Exodus 2:3)

Creative Idea for the Week

Floatation Experiment:
Moses mother put him in a basket she coated with pitch (tar). This made it waterproof so it could float. Try making little folded boats/rafts out of various types of paper (heavy and lightweight), or other materials (plastic, cotton, wood, cookie, metal). With a tub of water for testing, have the kids guess which material will float and which will sink.
