Trusting the Word and Nothing Else at All
Trusting the Word and Nothing Else at All:
Luther's Design for Evangelical Preaching
by Perry Toso
When humans speak, we talk about things, where our words operate at the level of symbol or signification. But when God’s Word speaks to us, His Word happens. That is because God’s Word operates at the level of effect. Whatever God says happens -- always! His Word will never return void but will, without fail, accomplish what He sent it to do.
This has enormous implications for preaching! No longer is the preacher a prosecuting attorney seeking to bring in a positive verdict for God, relying perhaps upon one’s rhetorical skill to do the deed. Rather, if, (big if) the preacher speaks what he or she is authorized to speak by God’s Word, something God-sent will happen. Always. Luther discovered this. True evangelical preaching believes and practices this. This book details the wonderful ramifications of that discovery.
At a time when the Word of God is casually avoided or actively silenced, it is more important than ever to stress the power at work when God speaks. This book not only reminds preachers of the importance of proclamation, it helps lay readers to know what to listen for.
