The Seven Churches of Revelation
A Nine-Session Bible Study
by Pastors Mark Brodbeck and Steven E. King
I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” (Revelation 1:10–11)
This nine-session series “The Seven Churches of Revelation” is based on the introductory chapters to the Book of Revelation, where the glorified Christ addresses seven real-life churches of ancient Asia Minor. Each of these churches had their own specific struggles and gifts, and Christ’s words include both criticism and praise. This study looks at the context and setting of the seven “mini-letters” and examines the message God had for each church. These same words address the modern Church as well, as we recognize similarities between the churches of Revelation and our own congregations today. What words of encouragement, exhortation, and hope can we find for our own day and age? In what ways are we part of a Revelation Church?
