David is Anointed by Samuel
Theme: Election
Biblical Basis • 1 Samuel 16:1-13
God sent the prophet Samuel to the house of Jesse in Bethlehem, to reveal God's choice of a new king. When God passed by all Jesse's older sons, the called in the youngest who was in the fields with the sheep. Samuel anointed young David as King.

Lesson Prayer
God of grace, we give you thanks for your wisdom and steadfast love. You chose your servant David to be king of Israel, and it is by your choosing that we have been brought into the community of Christ. Help us to embrace always the joy of belonging to you, of being made in your image, and of serving the world you love. In the name of our Savior Christ we pray. Amen.

Creative Idea for the Week
What does it feel like to be chosen? Pretty great, huh? Does it surprise you to hear that God has chosen you to be his son or daughter? It's true! He's chosen you because he loves you! It's as simple as that.
Make a tray of cut-out cookies that are decorated with different colors, sugars, and sprinkles. One by one, have the children choose a cookie. After everyone has chosen a cookie, ask each student, "Why did you choose the cookie you chose?" Answers could be as simple as, "I like the color or shape."
Ask, "Did you think one cookie would taste better than another cookie?" The obvious answer is no - they are the same when it comes to the ingredients. So it is with God's choosing - it's up to God! He loves us all, and he certainly loved all of David's brothers, but he chose David because he was the one God wanted for the job.
