Elijah's Offering

Biblical Basis • 1 Kings 18:20-39
The followers of the false god Baal were many, but only Elijah the prophet stood up on behalf of the Lord. Elijah had two altars built, challenging them to see which god would reveal his power and ignite the sacrifice with fire.

Lesson Prayer
Giver of all good things, you are the source of life, hope, and faith. Grant us a deeper faith that we would call upon your name in all circumstances, trusting in your wisdom and mercy. Thank you for helping us to see and turn away from false gods so that we might live holy lives in you. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Creative Idea for the Week
Discussion starter: Have you ever tried to start a fire without matches or a lighter? It's not easy! In our story today the prophet Elijah called upon the Lord to bring fire on a sacrifice to prove to Israel that the Lord is almighty, powerful one who reigns over all creation. Just to make it more difficult and prove his point even further, Elijah asked the Israelites to pour lots and lots of water on the bull and the wood. Lighting a fire on wet wood is very nearly impossible. But with God all things are possible!
