The Fiery Furnace
Theme: Resistance
Biblical Basis • Daniel 3:1, 4-7, 8-28
The King of Babylon built a large golden statue and forced the people to bow down and worship it. Whoever didn’t pray to the statue would be thrown into a fiery furnace. But three young Hebrew men stood up in faith and resisted the King's edict. God was with them.

Lesson Prayer
Everlasting Father, you are our almighty Lord, the only true God who created all that is and who sustains your people. We give you thanks for the ways in which you have rescued your people from certain death and destruction. Give us faith like the men in the fiery furnace, to trust that you will always be by our side, especially when danger presents itself. We pray this in the name of Christ. Amen.

Creative Idea for the Week
This lesson reminds us of the First Commandment, "You shall have no other gods before me." Martin Luther asked this question in his Small Catechism, "What does this mean?" His answer was simple and to the point, "We are to fear, love and trust God above all things." This is the most important commandment and the one that sets the foundation for the other nine.
Talk together about what it means to trust something like a golden idol? What are some things people trust today that are not God and that cannot truly help them? See what sort of list you can come up with together.
